This page follows on from page1 , examples of canals and ponds in the Amazon east of Manaus
the rio Amazon from Manaus to Iquitos
As mentioned on page1 , many rivers and tributaries throughout South america are interlinked by connecting rivers or canals. An example is marked on the map above
The interlink (Auati Paraná) between the Solimões (Amazon) and the Japurá/Paraná
The interlink (Auati Paraná) between the Solimões (Amazon) and the Japurá/Paraná as seen on Google earth.
The Japurá/Paraná is in the upper right hand corner and the Solimões (Amazon) in the lower left hand corner.

showing signs of canalisation in the region.
The lower exit of the interlink (Auati Paraná) to the Solimões (Amazon)
also showing signs of canalisation in the region.

also showing signs of canalisation.

Re-routing, adaptation and improvement of natural channels. It is easy
to detect canals when they run in straight lines, but not so obvious when they follow the
natural contours or are adapted from existing features as above.
Many ox-bow lakes which otherwise would be cut off and dried up, are connected to a web of channels.

Life along the Amazon. In ancient times there were no roads...
the rivers and natural channels were used for transportation hence the usefulness of artificial links connecting different river systems.
See also the Orinocco to Amazon interlink canal.
More interconnected channels. The "Atl" of "Atlantis" means "water". We can see how important the waterways were for ancient peoples.
In this photo, the lower channel has been contrived to join the upper channel.
At its lower end it joins the river Amazon. You can see how the original
natural, parallel formations have been cut through.
Another example of curved natural channels which have been dug through with interconnecting channels.

This example is 440 English feet or 400 Sumerian feet wide.

Everything in this region is now covered in dense forest,
but a pond about 2000 metres long would be about 4000 Sumerian cubits or 10 furlongs in length, similar to those found in
Beni....
