Santuario de Quillacas

Santuario de Quillacas is a village inside a volcano and is situated on the level Altiplano to the south of lake Poopo, about 300km from La Paz. It has a population of around 1,000 though most of the times appears to be a sleepy village.
Each year on the 24th of Septemebr it springs to life when people travel from all around to participate in the fiesta in honour of "El senor de Quillacas".
The present village was founded on 20 May 1501, but large blocks of stone found beneath the present houses suggest a much earlier settlement on the site.
The village is well worth a visit to see the most beautiful interior of the colonial church, with stonework picked out in red, black and white - the colours of Atlantis - and the village is centrally placed for further exploration of the region, leading to the nearby Atlantis site at Pampa Aullagas and the citadel of Alcaya at Salinas Garci Mendoza.
